Installing the Communications Server

Note:
The web-based configuration facility is intended to be the principal means by which the EasyServer II is configured. The command line method is available as an alternative for sites without web browser access.

Persons familiar with the installation of EasyServer II's can follow the steps listed under Quick Installation Instructions. Others should carefully follow the steps listed under Complete Installation Instructions

Required Components

The components required to install the EasyServer II and attach devices to the server ports include:

  • A power cord.
  • An Ethernet cable with a Thin Ethernet T- or 10BaseT (twisted-pair) connector.
  • A console terminal.
  • A serial cable for the console terminal. An adapter is required.

Quick Installation Instructions

This section is intended for experienced system administrators. If you are not experienced with hardware setup or have not previously installed an EasyServer II, go to the next section, Complete Installation Instructions.

To install the EasyServer II, complete the following steps:

Step 1.
Configure fixed IP address (optional)

  • BOOTP, RARP or DHCP network services
  • Stallion TruPort host based software (UNIX)
  • Stallion Extend host based software (Windows NT)

If any of these methods are to be used, the host based software should be installed and running prior to booting the EasyServer II.  The ethernet address (nn.nn.nn.nn.nn.nn.) of the EasyServer is displayed on the rear panel of the unit.

Step 2.
Locate Server. Place the EasyServer II on a flat, smooth, hard surface (not carpeted) away from heat sources.

Step 3.
Connect Server to Network. Attach the EasyServer II to an Ethernet network using either Thin Ethernet or 10BaseT connectors, as appropriate.

Step 4.
Connect Terminal to Server. (Optional) Attach a terminal to port 1 (the default console port) of the EasyServer II using a cable with an adapter. This step will only be required if an IP address is to be manually entered into the EasyServer II.

Step 5.
Supply Power. Plug the power cord into the EasyServer II and into a grounded power outlet.  On models without a switch, plugging in the power cord turns on the server. If the console terminal's baud rate is different from the Server's default baud rate (9600), the Server's startup messages might not be readable. Press <Enter> a few times. This causes the Server's autobaud function to change the server baud rate to match the baud rate of the console terminal.

Step 6.
Boot the Server.  The Server will automatically attempt to establish its address fromthe network. If it is unsuccessful, a message requesting you to enter it manually is displayed on the console port and front panel LED's will continue to flash.

If Step 1 was not performed, press <Enter> several times until you're prompted to enter an Internet address manually. Enter the Internet address or the word `NONE' if no Internet address is required i.e. setting up as a remote PPP server.
Enter the subnet mask when prompted, or press <Enter> to accept the default subnet mask.  If Stallion host based software (TruPort or Extend) was used to perform Step 1, then all further configuration of the EasyServer II ports should be carried out within the host based software utility.

Step 7.
Display Server's Home Page. Enter the IP address of the EasyServer II in a web browser connected to the same network. The Server's home page should be displayed. It is recommended to read the introductory information in `Start'.

Step 8
Setup Server. Select `Setup' to access the Server's configuration utilities. These include setting up all aspects of the Server itself, as well as terminals, modems, printers, direct connections. Some setup procedures require `privileged mode'. The default access is root and system. A unique password should be set during server setup.

The procedures for the above are largely self-explanatory. Where more detail is needed for setting up specific devices and services, view the appropriate documents via the User Documentation link at the top of the page.

These are the minimum steps required to get the EasyServer II up and running on an Ethernet network.
