Setting up a Terminal

Using Web Configuration.
Invoke the Server's setup utility by entering its IP address in a network-connected web-browser, (i.e. http://123.456.789.001).

Step 1.
Press the 'Setup' button. Specify a valid user name and password, if prompted.

Step 2.
Select the 'Terminal' hyperlink from the main Setup screen.

Step 3.
Specify the following:

  • Ports to which terminal(s) are to be connected - Port 01 to 08 or 16.
  • Telnet, Rlogin or Menu - (default telnet) automatically either telnet or rlogin to the specified host or IP address.
  • Baud Rate - from 5 to 230,400 or autobaud (default 9600).
  • Character size - 8 or 7 (default 8).
  • Parity - none, even, odd, mark or space (default none)
  • Stop bits - 1 or 2 (default 1)
  • Flow Control - none, hardware or software (default software)

Step 4.
Press the Configure button when ready. The input parameters are implemented immediately. The setup program now confirms that the input has been accepted by displaying the Configuration Results screen.

Using Command Line Configuration.
To set up a terminal, perform the following:

Step 1.
Attach a terminal to any open port on the Communications Server using RJ-11, RJ-12 or RJ-45 cables and an adapter (refer to the EasyServer Appendix: Cables and Connectors).

Step 2.
Turn on the terminal.

Step 3.
Press <Enter> several times until the following appears:

ETS-X Communications Server VX.XXX
Port 2:    PORT_02
Terminal:  ansi [Status Line, Turbo SSU]
Username:  None
Enter username:

Step 4.
Enter a username and press <Enter>.
The local prompt appears and the terminal is ready.

Please type HELP for assistance
Local 2>

Note:  In the previous examples, the terminal is attached to port 2.
The default port settings are sufficient for most terminals. However, there may be instances where the serial communication settings are not compatible with your terminal. Refer to Appendix B if you have problems with your terminal or get no response from the Communications Server.

Setting up a Remote Console

Telnet logins to the Communications Server do not have a physical Communications Server port associated with them; they are logical connections to the communications server. Each connection is associated with a remote console port (ports 5-8 on four-port models, and ports 9-16 on eight-port models). Database settings are copied from a template port (port 0) to the remote console ports. Users can customise their remote console port settings with SET PORT commands and view their settings with the SHOW PORT command. Any settings made to a remote console port using SET PORT commands cannot be saved and are lost when the port is logged out. However, the database settings for the template port can be modified with the CHANGE PORT 0 command.

Commands that specify ports can be used with remote console ports except for the following:

CONNECT PORT
CONNECT PORT PORT
SET SERVER CONSOLE PORT
SET TELNET LISTENER PORT
SET SERVICE PORTS

In addition, you cannot run SLIP or PPP on any remote console ports.

TCP/IP Remote Console
You can connect to the Communications Server using Telnet from any
TCP/IP host on the network. The following example shows how a user on a UNIX system on the network can connect to a communications server named docdock.

% telnet docdock

You're now connected to the communications server on a pseudo port and can login as if you are connected directly to the communications server.

Setting up a Login over a Serial Line

A login over a serial line is used where generic serial devices other than terminals, printers and modems need to be connected.

Using Web Configuration.
Invoke the Server's setup utility by entering its IP address in a network-connected web-browser, (i.e. http://123.456.789.001).

When the Setup front page is displayed:

Step 1.
Press the 'Setup' button. Specify a valid user name and password, if prompted.

Step 2.
Select the 'Direct Connection' hyperlink from the main Setup screen.

Step 3.
Select 'Login over a Serial Line' from the 'Setup Direct Connection' screen.

Step 4.
Specify the following:

  • Ports to which the serial device(s) are to be connected- Port 01 to 08 or 16.
  • Baud Rate - from 5 to 230,400 or autobaud (default 115200).
  • Telnet or Rlogin - (default is telnet) automatically either telnet or rlogin to the specified host or IP address.
  • Character size - 8 or 7 (default 8).
  • Parity - none, even, odd, mark or space (default none)
  • Stop bits - 1 or 2 (default 1)
  • Flow Control - none, hardware or software (default hardware)

Step 5.
Press the Configure button when ready. The input parameters are implemented immediately. The setup program now confirms that the input has been accepted by displaying the Configuration Results screen.
