Installing the Windows NT Driver

Note: Ensure boards are physically installed in the system before attempting to install the driver.

Step 1.
Boot Windows NT and bring up the `Network Settings' dialog.

  • On NT versions earlier than 4.0, select Main > Control Panel > Network.
  • On versions 4.0 or later, select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network

Step 2.
Click the Adapter tab, then the `Add Adapter' button.

Step 3.
On NT versions earlier than 4.0, the system will display a list of network adapter cards. Select the last entry:
<Other> Requires disk from manufacturer', and press the `Continue' button.
On NT versions 4.0 or later select the `Have Disk' button.

Step 4.
Specify the path to the driver directory on the CD (ie,. D:\winnt\i386 where D: is your CD drive) and press 'OK'

Step 5.
Board types. The system will then display a list of board types. Select the appropriate board and press `OK'.

Step 6.
Multiple buses. If your system has multiple buses and the card you have selected is compatible with more than one bus, you will be asked to select the bus type (eg. ISA, PCI) and bus number.

Step 7.
ISA/PCI.  If the board you are installing is in an EISA bus, you will be asked to select the number of the bus slot that the board is in. If you are installing an ISA bus, you will be asked to select I/O address and Interrupt Request number (IRQ). For PCI, the installation dialog will automatically detect installed boards and display a list of those which have not been previously configured. You should select one of these boards. Press `OK' once this step is complete.

Step 8.
No. of Ports. Specify the number of EasyIO ports and the COM port names (default names are allocated, but you may change these if you wish) by selecting either 4 or 8 port configuration.

Step 9.
Installation proceeds to completion without further user input. The driver will be started automatically when the system is rebooted.

Boot Errors.
If an error occurs during the boot process, a message will be displayed by the Service Control Manager. These may be caused by incorrect DIP switch settings, address clash or a faulty board. Use the Event Viewer in Administrative Tools to check for driver errors. Stallion driver errors are indicated by 'StlnATA' in the Source field. Board diagnostics, described later in this document, may be used to check for faulty boards.

Driver Administration

This section outlines various driver administrative functions.

Port Configuration

Win32 applications are responsible for configuring port settings such as baud rate and handshaking. DOS applications should configure port settings through the standard Ports dialog (Control Panel > Ports).

Installing further EasyIO's

The procedure is as described above, but in step 3 you will be able to pick the appropriate board type from the list of known network adapters. Steps 4 and 5 are omitted.

Reconfiguring and Removing EasyIO's

From the network settings dialog, select EasyIO from the displayed list. Select the `Configure' or `Remove' button. After reconfiguring or removing cards the system should be rebooted.

Updating the Driver Software

Bring up the `Network Settings' dialog (from Control Panel > Network). Select EasyIO and click the `Update' button. Specify the path to the driver directory on the CD (ie,. D:\winnt\i386 where D: is your CD drive) and press 'OK'. Wait until the update is complete, remove the diskette and restart the system.
