Product Question
Problem
Can Modems connected to a LantraServer be shared/used by Windows 95 clients?
Resolution
The EasyServer II is a communications/terminal server that provides remote access and remote ports (for terminals, printers and other serial devices) for Ethernet networks using TCP/IP and is primarily used in UNIX and mixed operating system environments.  The LantraServer has all of the functionality of the EasyServer II and adds tight integration with Windows NT using the LantraServer Extend software (previously NERP).  Extend makes remote serial ports on the LantraServer appear as native Windows NT COM ports and can be used for Windows NT RAS (Remote Access Service) as well as any other Windows NT serial application.

One of the advantages of the LantraServer is its ability to share its serial ports amongst Windows NT computers that have Extend installed.  Thus modem pools can be created and shared amongst Windows NT workstations and servers.

Unfortunately, at this time (August, 2000) Stallion Technologies does not have a version of Extend for Windows 95.  However there is an alternative.

Stallion Technologies is currently including support for RFC2217 (Telnet COM Port control option) which allws 3rd party client software which supports RFC2217 to work with EasyServer II, LantraServer and Stallion's range of VPN and Internet Gateways under the ePipe brand name.  Currently the ePipe supports this protocol and firmware for EasyServer II and LantraServer which supports RFC2217 will be released soon.

An example of software for Microsoft Windows (all versions since Windows 95) that supports RFC2217 is DialOut/EZ and DialOut/IP from Tactical Software (http://www.tacticalsoftware.com).  This software installs local COM ports under Windows which can be linked to serial ports on Stallion's communications servers.  See the ePipe documentation for further details.
